The Pessimist

An avid duck hunter was in the market for a new bird dog. His search ended when he found a dog that could actually walk on water to retrieve a duck. Shocked by his find, he was sure none of his friends would ever believe him.

He decided to try to break the news to a friend of his, a pessimist by nature, and invited him to hunt with him and his new dog.

As they waited by the shore, a flock of ducks flew by. They fired, and a duck fell. The dog responded and jumped into the water. The dog, however, did not sink but instead walked across the water to retrieve the bird, never getting more than his paws wet.

The friend saw everything but did not say a single word.

On the drive home the hunter asked his friend, "Did you notice anything unusual about my new dog?"

"I sure did," responded his friend. "He can't swim."

悲観主義者

カモ猟に情熱を燃やすハンターが、市場で新しい猟犬を探していた。そしてついに、これは！という犬を見つけた。なんとその犬は、水の上を歩いてカモを取ってくるという技をもっているのだ。ビックリ仰天した彼は、仲間の連中は、きっと誰も信じないないだろうと思った。

ハンターは、友人の一人に、この話を伝えることにした。その友人は、生来悲観主義者である。彼を誘い、新しい猟犬とともに狩りに出かけた。

岸辺で待ちかまえていると、カモの群れが飛んできた。彼らが発砲すると、一羽のカモが落ちた。犬はさっと反応して水に飛び込んだ。しかし、沈むことなく水の上を歩いて渡り、獲物を捕獲してきた。濡れたのは手足だけだった。

友人はこの一部始終をみていたが、何も言わなかった。

家へ帰る車の中で、ハンターはこの悲観主義の友人に訊いた。「あの新しい犬、何か普通じゃないって気が付いたか？」

「気付いたさ」 友人は応じた。 「泳げないんだな」
