Against Wars

The social studies teacher had just finished a unit on war and peace. "How many of you," he asked, "would say you're opposed to war?"

Not surprisingly, all hands went up.

The teacher asked, "who'll give us the reason for being opposed to war?"

A large, bored-looking boy in the back of the room raised his hand. "Johnny?" The teacher said.

"I hate war," Johnny said, "because wars make history, and I hate history."

戦争反対！

社会科の先生は、ちょうど戦争と平和の授業を終えたばかりだった。「この中で、」先生が質問する。「戦争に反対の人は手をあげてください」

当然、みんな手をあげた。

先生は続けて質問する。「じゃあ、なぜ戦争に反対なのか、その理由を言える人は？」

ガタイのでかい、退屈そうな少年が、教室の後ろのほうから手をあげた。「はい、ジョニー君」と先生があてた。

「戦争は嫌いです」ジョニーは言った。「だって、戦争すると歴史に残りますよね。ボク、歴史嫌いですもん」
